Sophie E. (Aftanas) Gima

SOPHIE E. (AFTANAS) GIMA, 91, of Follansbee, WV, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at Weirton Geriatric Center, Weirton, WV. Sophie was born on September 19, 1931 in Colliers, WV. She was the daughter of the late John Aftanas Sr. and Kate (Wydre) Aftanas. Sophie was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Follansbee, WV and Brooke County Senior Center. After her husband, George, passed away she worked at St. Francis Centre, Follansbee, WV. She loved her job especially being around all the people. In her spare time, Sophie liked to work on word search puzzles, watching game shows, and working in the yard. She loved to sit outside on the porch to visit with the neighbors. In addition to her parents, Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, George; infant twin daughters; a son-in-law, Dennis Mohoroski; and seven siblings: Joseph, Walter, Stanley, Chester and Frank Aftanas, Mary Granato and Helen Zdybicki. Sophie is survived by two children: Stanley Gima and his wife, Mary of Follansbee, WV and Linda Mohoroski of Weirton, WV; three grandchildren: Nicole Gima, Matthew Mohoroski and Carly Long and her husband, Jeff; two great grandchildren, Kandis Gratchen and Addelyn Andrews; a brother, John Aftanas Jr. and his wife Frances of Weirton, WV; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends were received on Friday, March 24, 2023 until the time of Liturgy of the Word, at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, with Father Jude Perera presiding.
