Mary Elizabeth Charnie

MARY ELIZABETH CHARNIE, 95, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully, after reciting the rosary, with her family at her side on April 11, 2023. Mary was born on December 20, 1927, in Holliday’s Cove, West Virginia, to Michael and Stella Baron Bodnar. She was the eldest of six children and graduated from Follansbee High School in 1945. She was honored to be the May Queen at Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church. On February 8, 1948, Mary married George J. Charnie, Sr. Together, they built a successful family business, Charnie Insurance, which has been serving the Weirton Area for 75 years. Mary and George worked side by side, and nothing gave her more joy than being with her family at work and at family gatherings. Sadly, George passed away on September 16, 2006. The two were inseparable, and Mary missed him dearly. Mary was an exceptional cook and enjoyed traveling and reading. Mary was a ray of radiant sunshine. She was always kind, pleasant and positive. She was an inspiration to us all. In recent years, she was extremely determined to get better and pushed herself relentlessly towards that goal. Mary nourished her faith as a member of Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, and the Christian Mothers. She was also a member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Independent Insurance Agents of West Virginia. She was always willing to lend a helping hand to the Madonna High School PTA when her children were in school. In addition to her parents, and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her sisters, Kathryn Bodnar, Emma Davies, and Catherine Iaconis. The family would like to give heartfelt thanks to Mary’s medical care team, Dr Coroneos and Mary, Dr Kubicki, and her WMC home health team Melissa, Kathleen, Sara, Haley, Jen and Dana. Mary will be remembered with love by her children, George J. Charnie, Jr.; Mary Kaye (Tony) Charnie- Druliner, George Ann (Paul) Callinan, and Marilyn Charnie; her grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth “Marni” (Andrew) Vanacore, Christopher, Robert, Georgia and Danny Druliner, Danielle (Justin) Monson, Patrick (Ashley), Carly, and Kevin Callinan, and Tommy Charnie; her great grandchildren, Bobby, Gianna, Mary Elizabeth, Vivian Vanacore , Kaeden Monson and a great grandson on his way; her sisters, Dorothy Grecula and Margie Kendrach; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation was held Friday, April 14, 2023, at the Greco Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, April 15, 2023, at Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, with interment following at Saint Paul’s Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church or the Weirton Community Bread Basket. Share tributes at www.grecohertnick.com.
