Isabell Metzger, a long time resident of Wellsburg, celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, July 6.
Isabel was born and raised in Fayette City, PA and spent most of her adult life living at 920 Washington Pike, Wellsburg. She currently resides at Weirton Geriatric Center.
She married William (Bill) Metzger in 1943 and they were married for 67 years before he passed away in 2013 at the age of 93.
She has one surviving sibling, a sister, Jean (Chalfant) Vastartis of Cleveland, OH who is 93 years old. Isabel also had three brothers: Bob Chalfant of Weirton, Bill Chalfant of Follansbee; and Dewey Chalfant of Fayette City, PA. Isabel is the second from the oldest.
Isabel has three children: Carol (Bill) Lynn of Wellsburg; Mary Jane (Jim) McElroy of Follansbee; and Barbara (Gene) Lauch of Center Township, PA)
She has four grandchildren: Lara (McElroy) Woodrum of St. Albans, WV; Scott McElroy of Weirton; Jennifer (Lauck) Rodgers of Williamsport, PA; and Brian Lauck of St. Albans, WV. She also has four great-grandchildren: Gillian Woodrum, and Connor, Ethan and Maesie Rodgers.
After high school, Isabell went to business college.
Before getting married, she worked for two years as a secretary at Montgomery Ward in Fayette City, PA.
After getting married, she lived on the Metzger farm with her husband and first child. In Early 1950, they moved to Wellsburg and opened the Chalfant Buick Garage in partnership with Isabell’s brother, Bill. The garage was located on Route 2.
Isabell was also a homemaker who loved to cook, play the piano, read and spend time with her family.
When her oldest daughter went off to college, she realized that she would soon have an “empty nest” at home and decided to go back to work in 1966. She worked as a secretary for Eagle Manufacturing Company for 19 years before retiring.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wellsburg where she sang in the adult choir, many times singing solos during worship services, and rang bells in the bell choir.
Isabell also belonged to the Hetty Elizabeth Beatty Questers of Steubenville, OH.
