CHARLES WILLIAM GILKEY, 88, of Wellsburg, WV died peacefully on Thursday, July 27, 2023, with his family at his side at Valley Hospice Care North in Steubenville, OH. Born on February 23, 1935, in McKinleyville, WV a son of the late Albert and Irene (Humphrey) Gilkey. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Michael Spencer in 2014. Charlie graduated from Wheeling Central High School in 1953 and went on to serve in the Navy during the Korean War. After 34 years he retired from Weirton Steel Corporation where he worked in security. He was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and served the church in many ways including being an usher and fixing and replacing broken furniture on the altar. Charlie loved to tinker with wood making projects. Charlie is survived by his wife, Lana (Bresock) Gilkey at home; four children, Jeff (Kathy) Gilkey of Follansbee, WV, Lori Spencer and LeeAnn (John) Klovanish both of Wellsburg, WV, and Traci (Stephen) Day of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren, Carrie (Tommy) Beynon, Sara Spencer (Nathan Johnson), Michael (Kayla) Spencer, and Charles Joseph Day; and eight great grandchildren. Visitation for Charlie was held on Monday, July 31, 2023, at the Mullenbach Funeral Home, Follansbee. A Catholic Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Wellsburg, with the Rev. Father Gerald Muoka as celebrant.
