The City of Weirton will receive $22.47 million to increase the city’s water system treatment capacity from 4 million gallons per day (MGD) to 8 MGD to allow for growth and economic development.
U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that funding from the U. S. Environmental Protection.
The award was secured through a Congressionally Directed Spending request made by Sen. Capito.
“The economic development taking place in Weirton is creating jobs and growing the economy. I have seen this growth first-hand and I am thrilled to see the critical resources I advocated for reach the city,” Capito said.
“This funding will double the city’s water system treatment capacity, allowing expansion of services for residents and current and future redevelopment. I will continue supporting investments like this – which have a direct benefit for West Virginia – through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee.”
