Weirton to Receive $22.47 Million for Water System Upgrades

The City of Weirton will receive $22.47 million to increase the city’s water system treatment capacity from 4 million gallons per day (MGD) to 8 MGD to allow for growth and economic development.
U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), ranking member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that funding from the U. S. Environmental Protection.
The award was secured through a Congressionally Directed Spending request made by Sen. Capito.
“The economic development taking place in Weirton is creating jobs and growing the economy. I have seen this growth first-hand and I am thrilled to see the critical resources I advocated for reach the city,” Capito said.
“This funding will double the city’s water system treatment capacity, allowing expansion of services for residents and current and future redevelopment. I will continue supporting investments like this – which have a direct benefit for West Virginia – through my role on the Senate Appropriations Committee.”
“The City of Weirton wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Senator Capito for her diligent efforts in securing funding which makes it possible to double our water plant capacity. With this important infrastructure improvement Weirton now has great opportunities for future growth,” said A. D. “Butch” Mastrantoni, Weirton’s utilities director.
