CACDA Hosts Christmas Concert

West Liberty University’s chapter of CACDA (Collegiate American Choral Director Association) will host a Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m., in the sanctuary of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church. The concert will consist of club members joined by Dr. Linda Cowan and feature performances of Christmas classics such as “Blue Christmas’ ‘, “O’ Holy Night’ ‘, “I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas” and many more. The concert is free but donations will be accepted to aid members of the chapter who will be attending the WVACDA (West Virginia American Choral Director Association) conference in February.
President Rachel Price commented about what it means to her when performing at the Christmas concert, “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to put together such a fun program! It’s truly an honor to get to spread some holiday cheer to the community that does so much for us.”
Additionally, Dr. Douglas McCall, Assistant Professor of Music College of Liberal and Creative Arts, assists the group in their journey to become choral directors and performers. His job is to ensure that the students have a positive experience spreading the love of music and making sure that their voice is heard. “Student groups like Collegiate ACDA allow these future music performers and educators to gain important leadership experiences. Not to mention, running a music event teaches them valuable planning and preparation skills they can use regardless of where they end up in the classroom or in front of a professional ensemble. I am so proud of these students for taking charge and putting this event together!” said Dr. McCall.
The chapter of CACDA consists of music education and vocal performance majors who attend West Liberty. The goal of this program is to provide students with an opportunity to make connections with those who are already teaching or performing in the field. The chapter aims to spread the joy of music and what it means to be music educators on the Hilltop. Dr. Linda Cowan, Professor of Music in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts, will also perform a solo Christmas song “River”. Dr. Cowan commented “It’s nice to see our students offering a concert like this to our community. It will be a fun time, and you can go see the Oglebay lights afterward- bonus!”
