Joanne Barkhurst

JOANNE BARKHURST, 80, of New Cumberland, WV died Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Weirton Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born July 9, 1943 in Steubenville, OH, the daughter of the late Walter and Helen (Swearingen) Markle. She was also preceded in death by her in-laws, Paul and Delnora (Diamond) Barkhurst as well as an infant son, Brian Paul. After graduating from Weir High School in 1961, Joanne worked on and off for many years at various banks including Peoples Bank, Wesbanco, and First National Bank taking time off to raise her family before returning to work. She was an active member of the Oakland Presbyterian Church congregation and choir as well as an excellent housekeeper and cook. No one ever went hungry at Joanne’s house. Aside from singing in the church choir, Joanne enjoyed spending time with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren. Joanne married the love of her life, Albert “Manny” Barkhurst, on March 18, 1967. In addition to her husband, surviving are one son Bradley (Belinda) Barkhurst of Weirton; two daughters Kristine (Brian) Spurlock of Chester and Nancy (Christian) Watkins of New Cumberland; brother Kenneth (Helen) Markle of Paris, PA; sisters Linda (Rich) Strosky and Dottie (Robert) Reardon, both of Weirton; brother in-law and sister in-law James (Carol) Cassella of Georgetown, PA; six grandchildren Haley, Lauren, Caleb, Gabriella, Alexandra and CJ as well as many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Visitation was held Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Weirton. A funeral service was held Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the funeral home, with Pastor Randy Krebs officiating. Burial took place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
