John Louis Velegol, Jr.

JOHN LOUIS VELEGOL, JR., 85, of Colliers, WV, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Weirton Medical Center, just four days after his beloved wife, Sally. John was born on January 23, 1938 in Colliers, WV. He was the eldest son of the late John Louis Velegol Sr. and Elizabeth (Tokas) Velegol. John was a licensed land surveyor, but primarily worked in the steel industry as a chemist, supervising and working on quality control. Many will remember John for his love of farming, local history, meteorology, mining, polkas, antiques, and winters in Florida, along with a passion for DIY maintenance and repair of all things mechanical. He was also devoted to caregiving for his wife and parents. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally Ann (Hodge) Velegol on Tuesday, January 2, 2024; his son, Michael David Velegol; and two brothers-in-law, Dr. James Joseph Hodge and Harry McCarthy. John is survived by his son, Tim Velegol; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Hodge; three siblings: David Velegol, Sr. and wife, Carolyn, Patricia Ann McCarthy and Mary Elizabeth Wigginton and husband, Ed; and nieces and nephews. Family and friends of John and his wife, Sally were received on Monday, January 8, 2024 until the time of the funeral service, at the James Funeral Home, Follansbee, with Reverend Debra Dague officiating, where he and his wife laid in state together.
