Thomas William Tompos

THOMAS WILLIAM TOMPOS, 77, of Weirton, WV passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville following a brief Illness. He was born on August 15, 1946, a son of Senator William and Helen Bambrick Tompos. Tom graduated from Weir High School in 1964 and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from West Liberty State College. While enrolled at West Liberty, Tom was the president of his fraternity, Beta Sigma Epsk. Tom was a well-known and respected member of the Weirton and Hancock Communities as a leader. He became a Hancock County Deputy Sheriff in 1969, serving as the department’s first sergeant and proudly dedicating forty years of service to the department. He served as Hancock County Deputy Association President for many years as well as the WV Deputy Sheriff’s Board of Directors. Tom was the driving force behind the “SOS” committee which saved Weir High and Oak Glen from separating. Tom, along with Seargent Cliff Bebout founded the popular, “Shop with a Cop,” program in 1988, which has provided Christmas gifts for 5,000 children since its inception. People have said that Tom helped more Hancock County children than any person in history. At the time of his retirement in 2008, Tom had served longer as a law enforcement officer longer than anyone since the state’s founding on June 20, 1863. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Brandi Lynne, son Michael Losier, brother Raymond Tompos, and his loving companion Wanda Channing. Left to cherish Tom’s memory with love and admiration are his daughter Michelle (Abel) Gonzalez and grandchildren Tyler (Jenna) Clancey, and Joseph Clancey, and fiance Kelsey Thompson, Sarah, Emily (Vitalli Amis), Isabella Gonzalez, great-grandchildren Laylahh, Laylani, and Jubilee Clancey, additional survivors include many grand and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Friends were received Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton, where funeral services were celebrated on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. Tom was entombed in New Cumberland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tom’s name to the Spina Bifida Association at sbawp.org.
