Donald Reed Henry

DONALD REED HENRY, 84. of Steubenville, OH, formerly of Wellsburg, WV died peacefully on Saturday, March 30, 2024, after a 50-year battle with progressive Multiple Sclerosis. Don was born on March 24, 1940, in Wheeling, WV and is the son of the late Reed and Pearl (Frye) Henry. In addition to his parents Don is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Ronald Jostol. Surviving is his soulmate and love of his life, Rose (Lish) Henry whom he married on June 11, 1966. They have one daughter, Angela (John) and two grandsons, Keegan, and Kamden. He is also survived by his sister Jackie Jostol and his nephews Barry (Nickie) and Chris (Annmarie) Jostol. Don graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1958. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Marshall University in 1962. Don taught both Social Studies and Phys ED. Don started his teaching career in St Mary’s, WV; however, after spending one school year there he decided to come home to the community that he grew up in. Don accepted a teaching position at Wellsburg Middle School where he taught and coached until his retirement in 1985. Anyone that knew him knows that he was passionate about teaching and coaching and that he loved all sports. While he was versed in many sports his true passion was basketball. He coached the Wellsburg boys middle school team for several years until he went on to coach the Brooke High Girls Varsity basketball team from 1981-1983. Don was super competitive and very rarely did he lose a game at the middle school level. He also had two winning seasons at Brooke High School before he had to step down because of his MS. After his retirement from teaching Don could be seen tutoring kids at the Brooke County library. He truly cared about making a difference in kids’ lives. In addition to teaching and coaching he worked summers managing the Wellsburg pool, the playgrounds, and the many summer activities throughout Wellsburg. He was very involved in coordinating the 4 of July activities and assuring that every playground had a dazzling float in the Wellsburg 4 of July parade. Visitation will be Friday, April 5, 2024 from 10 a.m. until the time of Words of Remberance of Don’s life at 11 a.m. at Reasner Funeral Home, Wellsburg. Following the short service, there will be Funeral Liturgy with Mass at 1 p.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church, Steubenville, Ohio. Interment will follow at Franklin Cemetery.
