Ernest Dale Andrews

ERNEST DALE ANDREWS, 93, of Weirton, WV, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024, at Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville, OH, just one day shy of his 94th birthday. Born on April 15, 1930, in New Castle, Pa, he was one of eight children born to Clarence and Dorothy (Freed) Andrews. Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Marjorie Andrews; his second wife, Barbara Wolfe Baselj Andrews; his son, Kenneth D. Andrews; his two sisters; his four brothers; a stepson, Paul Baselj; and his son in law, Randall Wolford. Ernie spent his professional life at Babcock and Wilcox Steel, where he worked diligently as an overhead crane operator until his retirement. His work was a significant part of his life, but it was his passions and his family that truly defined him. After the loss of his first wife, Marjorie, Ernie’s vibrant spirit found companionship again when he met Barbara Wolfe Baselj at a polka dance in Houston, PA. The couple married on May 13, 1989, and shared many common interests, particularly their love for music and dancing. Both skilled at playing the button box and accordion, Ernie and Barb were regulars on the dance floor and relished in the joy of music. In retirement, Ernie and Barb embraced the freedom of travel, exploring the United States with a particular focus on being present for their grandchildren’s events. Whether biking, dancing, playing music, or attending Mass in whichever city they found themselves camping, they made the most of every moment. Ernie was known for his cheerful, carefree personality, a true character who approached life with a sense of humor and ease, rarely letting anything disturb his peace—except, perhaps, his fervent aversion to President Donald Trump and Fox News, which were among the few things that could rile him. He will be remembered with love and admiration by his daughter, Diane L. Wolford; his stepchildren, William (Debra) Baselj, Lisa (Aaron) Donald, David (Heather) Baselj, Jeff (Deb) Baselj, and Jim (Helen) Baselj; ten grandchildren, Weston, Caroline, Remington, Hunter, Hayley, Katie, John Paul, Will, Kayla and Nichole; and two great-granddaughters, Payton and Evie; and a brother, Allen E. (Irene) Andrews. Visitation was held at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, where Funeral Liturgy of the Word was also held, with Fr. Bill Matheny presiding. Ernie was laid to rest at Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Weirton. Share tributes at www.grecohertnick.com.
