SHIRLEY MAE LEMLEY POLAND peacefully passed away July 17, 2024. She was born on August 26, 1931, in Cameron, WV. She was the daughter of Robert A. and Ethel M. Dent Lemley. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dwain E. Poland, her brother Donald Lemley, and her daughter Dianne Whitehead Doyle. A devoted and active member of her community, Shirley was a former member of Paris Presbyterian Church where she served in numerous roles including Elder, Deacon, Lay Reader, Sunday School Teacher, member of the funeral committee, editor of the church newsletter, Clerk of Session, United Presbytery Representative, and Choir member. Her commitment to service extended beyond the church as she volunteered to deliver meals for the Burgettstown Senior Center. Shirley retired from Weirton Medical Center after an admirable 31 years of service. Then, she was a valued staff member of Dr. John until her retirement in 2008. At the time of her passing, she was a member of the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter Gail Van Horn, son-in-law Randy Whitehead, and her grandchildren Jason Van Horn, Mitchell Van Horn, and Laura Whitehead. Shirley also leaves behind five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly. Funeral services were celebrated Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton, with Elder Roger Criss officiating for Rev. Bill Stout. Interment followed immediately in Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s name to the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, 121 Ivy Lane, Weirton, WV. 26062 or Valley Hospice, 10686 OH-150, Rayland, OH. 43943.
