David N. Schoolcraft

DAVID N. SCHOOLCRAFT, 84, of Weirton, WV, passed Thursday, August 15, 2024 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA, after his brief battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was born May 22, 1940 in Pennsboro, WV, son of the late E. Norman and Thelma Shields Schoolcraft. David attended Glendale Elementary School and graduated from Cairo High School, May 1958. In November 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn “Carol” Haught Schoolcraft. From 1959 to 1986, David worked as a truck driver in the Line Gang at Weirton Steel Corp. David loved driving trucks and drove for several companies, including his last job for 20+ years when he drove truck for Eric Bates Carnival. David enlisted in the Army in 1963 and did his Basic Training at Fort Knox. He later joined the Army Reserve 463rd Engineer Battalion in Weirton. The last 3 years of his 27-year service was with the National Guard in Canonsburg, PA. David was a 55+ year member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, serving both as Deacon and Ordained Elder. He also took pride in mowing the church’s grass for several years. David was a past Scout Leader for Boy Scout Troop 33, Life Member of Oakland District Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a proud and active member of Wheeling #9 International Order of Odd Fellows, Encampment #1, and twice Grand Patriarch of the Grand Encampment of West Virginia. He was a member of Canton Friendly #11 in Wheeling, and served two terms as the Department Commander of the West Virginia Canton. David loved tinkering with his cars, including his pride and joy: his 2001 Chevy S10. David and Carol loved Covered Bridges and spent many hours finding and taking pictures of Covered Bridges in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Schoolcraft (Helen Jo), an infant brother, and an infant son; son-in-law, David Boyer; his in-laws, James “Todd” and Lottie Cowan Haught; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Harley Mason. David’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his wife of 65 years, Carol; daughter, Tracy Boyer; son, John Schoolcraft (Tracy). He was Papap to granddaughters, Ashley Boyer, Sierra and Brianna Schoolcraft, and his beautiful great-granddaughter, Paisleigh Lynn Boyer; nieces, Cindy Swisher, Rhonda Milkovich, Jennifer Knapp and Jeanette Linger; nephew, James Harley Mason; several great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. Visitation was held Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Weirton, where the service took place Thursday, August 22, 2024 with Pastor Randy Krebs presiding. Interment followed at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Bridgeville, PA, where military honors were rendered. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the WV Diabetes Camp for Children: Camp Kno-Koma, Care of: Ron Fletcher, Grand Scribe of the Grand Encampment of West Virginia, P.O. Box 226, Wheeling, WV 26003, in memory of David Schoolcraft. This camp is sponsored by the WV Grand Encampment and is one that David felt strongly about.
