Bethany College’s Matriculation Ceremony Marks New Chapter for Class of 2028

In a time-honored tradition dating back over a century, Bethany College officially welcomed the Class of 2028 during its Matriculation ceremony, held on Aug. 15, 2024.
Students walking through the Oglebay GatesAs part of the ceremony, new students participated in the historic walk through the Oglebay Gates. This symbolic passage, dating back to 1869, signifies the start of their journey at Bethany. The gates, originally constructed as the College’s main entrance, hold a special place in the College’s history and are central to the Matriculation tradition. The students will walk through these gates together only one more time—at their graduation.
Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi addressed the students and their families, emphasizing the significance of this milestone.
“Today marks the first of many firsts for our new students, including experiencing their first tradition together. Mere minutes ago, you followed in the footsteps of so many classes in walking through the Oglebay Gates, a treasured tradition that began generations ago.”
Caridi expressed his gratitude for their trust in Bethany College, promising that the institution will provide unwavering support for its students. “To our families with us today, thank you for sharing your sons and daughters with us and for guiding them with love and support to this milestone. We will do everything we can to have their backs at Bethany. ”

Caridi concluded his remarks by highlighting the transformative experiences that await the Class of 2028. “During your journey here, we are committed to investing in you and your experience. Recent examples of our forward-facing, ongoing momentum, and commitment to your success are all around you. We want the best for you, and we want you to be your best selves. So, bring your own stories, your perspectives, and your individual backgrounds and interests, and let the learning begin.”
The ceremony set a positive tone for the year ahead, as new students begin their academic journey at Bethany College, supported by a community committed to their growth and achievement.
