Bruins Lose Season Opener, 35-0

Beaver Local (OH) outgained the Brooke Bruins with 261 yards of offense to just 108 yards in the first half for the visitors enroute to a 35-0 win Friday night.
The game was marked by a pair of delays caused two separate lighting storms.
Beaver Local scored on four of five offensive possessions and returned an interception for its fifth score in the first half and a 35-0 advantage at intermission.
Casey Goff, Brooke’s head coach, said the Bruins didn’t tackle well and lost the physical battle.
Goff credited the Bruins with putting up a good fight in the second half as the teams were scoreless on a running clock.
The Beavers scored on their second offensive series by marching 80 yards to score on a two-yard run by running back Luke Rettos.
Kaleb Mays added the point-after to give the Beavers led a 7-0 at the 4:09 mark of the first quarter.
The Beavers exploded for four six-pointers in the second quarter.
Quarterback Taylor Johnston scored twice on runs of one and three years, before running back Brock Severs hauled in a 42-yard TD toss from Johnston as the Beavers went up 28-0 following three more points-after by Mays.
After Brooke had driven to the Beavers’ two-yard in the closing seconds of the first half, Beaver Local’s Severs turned in the defensive gem of the night when he picked off Bruin quarterback Ty Sperringer pass to the Beavers’ end zone and raced 100 yards the other way to score with no time left on the clock.
Mays added the point-after and the Beavers took a 35-0 lead into the locker room.
Johnston accounted for 220 of the Beavers’ 261 yards in the first half, including 190 yards through the air of eight-of-12 with a touchdown.
Severs had five catches for 136 yards receiving at the break with a touchdown.
Beaver Local held Brooke to just seven yards passing in the first half.
With Beaver Local up 35-0, a running clock started in the second half and neither team scored after halftime.
Brooke (0-1) will host the Independence Patriots from Coal City, WV, in Wellsburg Friday night.
Beaver Local (1-1) will face St. Clairsville Friday night.
