CORLISS K. “BUD” WETZEL, 85, of Weirton, WV, passed Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Weirton Medical Center. He was born March 18, 1939 in Steubenville, OH, son of the late John William Wetzel and Opal Pearle Stephen Wetzel. He is also preceded in death by sister, Margie Flinn (late Russell Flinn); brother, Leroyce Wetzel; and brother-in-law, David Gribben. Bud was a Weir High School graduate, Class of 1957. After graduation, Bud joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Columbus AF Base, Columbus, MS from 1962 to 1966. After honorable discharge from the Air Force, Bud began working at Weirton Steel Corporation as an electrician and motor inspector. While working on Browns Island, his friend and coworker suggested taking an early coffee break one day. In doing so, he and his brother-in-law and other coworkers survived the fatal Browns Island explosion of 1972. From that day forward, Bud stated that coffee saved his life. He would retire in 1995. Bud was a faithful man, who attended and served as a deacon at Weirton Heights Church of Christ. He married his loving wife, Jean Gribben on New Years Day 1963. Bud enjoyed woodworking among other hobbies. Bud is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean A. Gribben Wetzel; sons, Brian Wetzel and Curtiss Wetzel; grandsons, Caleb Wetzel (Tara), Joshua Wetzel (Abbey), Joseph Wetzel (Katelynn), and Isaac Wetzel; great-grandson, Miles Lincoln Wetzel; and sister-in-law, Patty Gribben. Per Bud’s wishes, there was no visitation. A memorial service will take place in the near future.
