WILLIAM RUSSELL CARL, 88, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 22, 2024, at the Stone Pear Pavilion in Chester. Born on March 1, 1936, in Avella, PA, he was one of four children born to Earl and Irene Craig Carl. A 1954 graduate of Avella High School, William was affectionately remembered in his yearbook as a man with “brains and brawn.” He served as a Weirton Steel (WSX) train engineer for 32 years, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment throughout his career. On April 6, 1957, William married the love of his life, Carrie Brautigam, and they shared a remarkable 67 years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and service to others. William was a kind man of deep faith, who often sought to share his love for scripture with fellow residents at the Stone Pear Pavilion. His faith was the foundation of his life, guiding him in his many roles as a devoted husband, father, and friend. Outside of work and family, William was a Master Gardener in Hancock County, nurturing both plants and relationships in his community. He also had a deep passion for music, particularly barbershop harmony. He was an active member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), serving as president of his local chapter and delighting many with his vocal talents. A proud member of the 25-Year Club at Weirton Steel, past president of the Washington County Fireman’s Association, and well-known for teaching bible study for over fifty years. William’s leadership and dedication to service were well-known. His strong character and selflessness left an enduring mark on everyone who knew him. In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother Ivan Carl and his niece Maryann Carl. William is survived by his beloved wife, Carrie, his sons W. Darrell (Diana Lynn) Carl of Weirton, David Earl Carl of Weirton, and step-grandsons, James and Brandon Myers, and step-great-granddaughter Laney Myers, brothers John (Debra) Carl of Avella, PA. and Riley Carl of Hickory, PA., his dear Cousin David L. Carl and his favorite four-legged friend, Sofie. Friends were invited to visit with William’s family on Wednesday, September 25, 204, at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton, where funeral services were held on Thursday, September 26, 2024, with Pastor Dennis Arnold officiating.
