DUNCAN JOHNSTON “RADAR” ECKELS, JR., 74, of Weirton, WV, passed away on September 28, 2024, after a six-year battle with illness. Born on November 8, 1949, in McDonald, PA, he was the eldest of four children born to Duncan Johnston Eckels, Sr. and Dolores Crowe Eckels. Duncan grew up in Weirton, WV, and graduated from Weir High School in 1969. On July 14, 1973, he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Kasprzak. Together, they built a loving home and were blessed with their son, Jason, and two cherished grandchildren, Avery (13) and Nathan (9). Duncan began his career with the City of Weirton in the Water Department before embarking on a 36-year journey as a millwright, retiring from the Basic Oxygen Plant of Weirton Steel/ArcelorMittal. His coworkers affectionately nicknamed him “Radar” for his resemblance to the character from the television show M.A.S.H.. Known for his ornery nature, which he inherited from his mother, Radar always brought a smile to those around him. Duncan had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, especially the woods, and was a passionate deer hunter. He eagerly awaited each fall season, hunting with both bow and arrow, as well as a rifle, and took great pride in harvesting 77 deer over his lifetime. Beyond his love of nature, Duncan will be remembered most for his role as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church and was actively involved in several organizations, including the Paris Sportsman’s Club, Weirton Steel 25 Year Club, and American Legion Post 10. Duncan will be remembered with love by his wife of 51 years, Mary Ann; his son, Jason Duncan Eckels (Angela); his grandchildren, Avery and Nathan Eckels; his brothers, Jim Eckels (Cathy) and Richard Eckels (Sharon); and his sister, Diane Minger. Visitation was held on Thursday, October 3, 2024 at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. on Friday, October 4, 2024 at Sacred Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Anthony Thurston presiding. Entombment will follow at Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Weirton. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Sacred Heart of Mary Church, 200 Preston Avenue, Weirton, WV 26062. Mary Ann and Jason would like to thank Dr. Pervaiz Rahman and Dr Sanjay Gupta along with the caring people of Valley Hospice and Weirton Medical Center for all the care they gave to Duncan.
