Merle E. Cusick

MERLE E. CUSICK, 89, of Keyser, WV, formerly of Wellsburg, WV peacefully left us on December 15, 2024 at his home in Keyser. Merle was born on April 22, 1935, in Wellsburg, WV. Merle, a dedicated employee, spent 65 years at Mondi Bags in Wellsburg. Through the company’s name changes, Merle remained a steadfast and loyal worker. Alongside his career, he was a devoted member of the Wellsburg Nazarene Church, where his faith and kindness shone through. He enjoyed watching the Mountaineers and Steelers play; talking about cars; testing his knowledge with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy; naps on the deck in the warm sun; singing along to Country Roads, The Gaither’s, or Booth Brothers; and when visitors came, he would tell stories and bring out things he collected over the years to share. When we would go to leave, we’d say, “C-ya later dad”. “If you’re lucky” was his reply. Besides Dad, Brother, and Uncle, his role as “Papa” brought him great joy. He cherished moments spent with his grandchildren Trace, Tristan, Ireland, and Olivia. Despite never wanting a dog of his own, he found a special place in his heart for Sixx, Maggie, and Daisy. Merle’s warmth, generosity, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by his surviving family members and the lives he touched throughout his journey. Merle is survived by his daughter, Lesley VanVorce (Kevin); sons, Doug Cusick (Dariusz) and David Cusick (Sara); four grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Boehm and Jonnie Tharp; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at Reasner Funeral Home, Wellsburg. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m., with Pastors Brian Knight and John Keener presiding. Interment will follow at Kadesh Chapel Cemetery, Apple Pie Ridge Road, Wellsburg. In honor of Merle, let’s remember one of his favorite quotes: “It’s nice to be important but more important to BE NICE!” May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before him.
