George “Butch” Messar, Jr.

GEORGE “BUTCH” MESSAR, JR., 82, of Wellsburg, WV died peacefully into a reunion with his wife, Sarah Virginia “Sallie” Messar on Monday, March 3, 2025 at Moundsville Health Care Center. He has now answered his last call as a member of the Wellsburg V.F.D., relinquished his authority as former Commander of the American Legion Post 34, and fulfilled his responsibilities on the Civil Service Commission. Born May 15, 1942 in Wheeling, WV a son of the late George and Alice (Nemith) Messar, Sr. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sarah Virginia (Weese) Messar, and his sister Alice Louise “Bunnie” Arthurs. George graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1960 and went on to serve in the U.S. Army. He later retired from Koppers Industries where he worked as an electrician. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a devoted member of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department where he was a member for over 50 years having worked his way up the ladder as Lieutenant, then Captain, and Later as Assistant Fire Chief for several years and served as treasurer of the fire department for many years. He held memberships in the V.F.W., the American Legion Post 34 where he served as treasurer and faithfully oversaw bingo for many years, the Wellsburg Loyal Order of Moose, and the Wellsburg Elks Lodge. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Carey and companion, Nick Lalich; granddaughter, Leannda Cavalier (Adam); grandson, Tyler Carey; great-granddaughers, Sienna and Adria Cavalier; sister-in-law, Sue Wilcox (Harland); several nieces and nephews including David Wilcox (Carolyn), George (Lisa) Arthurs, David Arthurs, Monica (John) Sutphin, and Richard Arthurs and fiance Clarissa Ray; his ex-son-in-law, Richard Carey; and many friends. At George’s request, there was no visitation. A memorial service is being planned for the near future. Arrangements by Mullenbach Funeral Home, Follansbee.
