JOSEPH N. COWHER, 23, of Weirton, WV, passed peacefully at home on Monday, March 17, 2025, after an 11 year battle with brain cancer. He was born January 23, 2002 in Weirton, son of Christopher Cowher, M.D. and Camille Castaldo, M.D. In spite of his many hardships, Joey remained determined to embrace life with passion and purpose. Joey was a 2020 graduate of Weir High School, where he enjoyed running cross country and being a member of the swim team. He was additionally awarded a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting from Franciscan University of Steubenville in 2024, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Outside of his many accomplishments, Joey was also an avid sports fan. He loved cheering for his favorite teams including the LA Chargers, Pittsburgh Pirates, WVU Mountaineers, and Franciscan Men’s Basketball team, who is coached by his cousin Joe Wallace. Joey is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Gertrude and Joseph Castaldo; paternal grandfather, Richard Cowher; and his beloved dog, Bella. In addition to his parents, Joey is survived by his sister, Abby; paternal grandmother, Joan Cowher; Godparents, Aunt Carol and Uncle Chas Dight; aunts, Cathy Adam (Jules), Chris Wallace (Bill), and Caryn DeFraia (late Roberto); and numerous cousins. Visitation will take place Friday, March 21, 2025, from 3-7 p.m., at Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home, Weirton. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, March 22, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Weirton, with Reverend Tony Thurston presiding. Entombment will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. Joey’s family would especially like to thank Dr. James Felker and UPMC Children’s Hospital Oncology Staff; Phlebotomist Lynette from Weirton Medical Center; Father Tony Thurston for Joey’s spiritual guidance throughout his lifetime; Dr. John Kirlangitis, Paula, and staff at Mainstream Physical Therapy for their kindness and friendship towards Joey. There are so many more individuals and groups who cared for Joey through the years, to whom the family is grateful.
