Muriel Irene Campbell

MURIEL IRENE CAMPBELL, 88, of Weirton, WV, passed Saturday, March 15, 2025 at home with beloved nieces by her side. She was the daughter of the late Harold L. and Helen I. Bickerstaff Campbell. She was born on October 21, 1936, in Steubenville, OH, but lived most of her life in Weirton, WV, on part of the original land grant of pioneer James Campbell. Muriel was a 1954 graduate of Weir High School and a 1957 graduate of Presbyterian University Hospital, School of Nursing. After obtaining her Registered Nurse license, she worked at Magee Women’s Hospital before enlisting in the United States Air Force when she served at Wilford Hall on Lackland Air Force Base. After discharge, she worked at Weirton General Hospital for eight years and upon completing her bachelor’s degree, she held the position of Director of In-Service Education. During this time, she served with the Pennsylvania Air National Guard as a Flight Nurse. After employment at Ohio State University Hospital, Muriel returned to Steubenville, OH, for a position, first as instructor, then as Assistant Director of the Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing. She completed requirements for a Master’s degree at the University of Dayton and a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Ohio University. In 1986, she developed the Ohio Valley Hospital Prime Time Office on Aging and continued as its director, and the director of the Hospital Volunteer Program until she retired from the Trinity Health System in 2000. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, H. Barry Campbell (Dianna); and her longtime companion, Barbara Smith. She leaves four beloved nieces: Michale Lynn Cottrill, Monica Lea Graham, Nanette Fay Howard (Wayne), Leslie Alberta Laibach (Russell); and one beloved nephew: Wade Barry Campbell (Kelly). She is also survived by her beloved adopted nephew, Daniel C. Carnahan; many great nephews and nieces, and also great great nephews and nieces. Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Weirton.
