Annual Spring Friends Event at the Library

Mark Twain will be portrayed by Doug Riley of Tunnelton, WV in a West Virginia Humanities Council History Alive! program in Celebration of the Friends of the Brooke County Public Libraries Annual Spring Event, in the Brooke County Public Library’s River Room on April 24, at 6:30 pm. This program is also made possible by the Friends of the Brooke County Public Libraries.
Mark Twain is celebrated as one of America’s great authors and humorists. As the young country rapidly grew into an international power in the second half of the 19th century, Twain shared his observations through writing and speeches. His best-known novels are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but his work includes nonfiction, magazine articles, monographs, and commentaries that provide interesting insight into the American story. Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Clemens.
Historical characterization is the vehicle for this program. Humanities scholars have carefully researched the writings, speeches and biographies of the characters they portray and whenever possible, use their original words.
The West Virginia Humanities Council is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing educational programs in the humanities for all West Virginians. For 40 years the Council has been providing educational programs in the humanities across the state.
This program is available to both non-profit and for-profit groups. For more information regarding the History Alive, call the West Virginia Humanities Council at 304.346.8500 or visit www.wvhumanities.org.
The Friends of the Brooke County Library are active and alive and we need more useful hands and creative minds as we plan events to support our Brooke County Libraries in 2025-2026. Dr. Loretta Scott said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” We need those in our member-ship to be those people who can help.
Your support will continue to make it possible to help provide the Brooke County Libraries with these annual expenses:
*Wellsburg Library Movie License
*Follansbee Library Movie License
*1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program (program bags)
*Summer Reading Program Stuff-a-Plush Project
*Wowbrary Newsletter Subscription
*Wi-Fi Hot spots
*Historical Portrayal for Spring Meeting
Our annual fundraisers, Santa and Easter Bunny Letters and our Membership Drive are helping to sustain our support for the Libraries, but costs for the above and other programs are increasing. The Board added the Festival of Wreaths, which turned out to be a great success. We raised approximately $1000. We need more help with this project through wreath donations and baked good items.
Please consider becoming a Friends member of the Brooke County Libraries.
The program is free and open to the public. Call 304.737.1551 or visit www.brookecountylibs.org/events to register.
