George M. McCardel, Sr.

GEORGE M. MCCARDEL, SR., 84, of Follansbee, WV peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 11th in the loving arms of his bride of 60 years, Carla L.(Hardesty) McCardel. He is survived by his wife and their three children, Lorraine (Dan) Milantoni of Follansbee, Michelle (Joseph) Serbin of Pittsburgh and George M. McCardel Jr (Susan) of Weirton. He was the proud and doting grandfather to Danielle and Amanda Milantoni, George M. McCardel III, and Jacob and Michael Serbin. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his mother and father, William P. and Anna (Skunda) McCardel of Michigan City, Indiana, formerly of Weirton, his brothers William and Tom of Weirton and his sister MaryAnn (McCardel) Tochell of Michigan City, Indiana. George was born in Mingo and raised on Adena Street in Weirton. He attended Follansbee High School before enlisting in the United States Navy where he served proudly on the USS Harlin R. Dickson as a Fire Control Specialist during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his dedicated military service, he returned home and married Carla L. Hardesty on September 5,1964. They went on to create a beautiful life together which included their three loving children. They were inseparable. George built a wonderful career of 30 years working for Weirton Steel Corporation before retiring in 2001 as a Tin Production Sales Manager. George treasured his military service. He attended most Navy reunions and cherished those friendships until the end. He proudly wore his Navy Veteran hat every time he left the house. He attracted attention from other veterans and he really took pleasure in connecting with them about their service. He was a member of the American Legion Post #33. George enjoyed every family gathering, especially when his children married and gave him grandchildren. He was an integral part of their lives and attended every event proudly. He was a devoted football fan, especially to his beloved Washington Redskins (Commanders), who almost went all the way this past season, to his delight. He liked traveling after retirement and looked forward to frequent trips to the beach with his wonderful wife, family and friends. He loved nature and sunsets, especially those at the beach and from his large backyard. It seems a fitting sendoff for him to leave his family while the sun was setting that day. George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a significant and cherished part of his family and their lives. He will be missed every day. A private service and burial are planned and his life will be celebrated everyday by those who knew and loved him most. Share online condolences at www.grecohertnick.com.
