REVEREND RICHARD LEONARD HUGGINS, 86, passed away Monday, March 10, 2025 in Lakeland, Florida. He was diagnosed with AML in November of 2024. After receiving treatments, complications set in, and he passed away in comfort and at peace. He was born August 29,1938 to the late Gerald Richard and Josephine (Leonard) Huggins of Wellsburg, WV. Dick met Joy Scott, his first wife, in the 6th grade. They were graduates of Wellsburg High School (class of 1956), and Davis and Elkins College, Elkins, WV. After their graduation from college they married and moved to Richmond VA where he earned his Master of Divinity at Union Theological Seminary. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister at the Wellsburg First Presbyterian Church. He served churches in Pennsylvania, West Virginia (New Cumberland), New Jersey, Florida and Aruba. With his warm, outgoing personality and humorous approach to life, Dick made friends wherever he went. He knew sadness and grief, yet no matter where he planted himself, he was always dedicated to serving the church, the community and the people. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Joy Scott and their daughter, Jennifer Anne Church. Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara (Wilson) Huggins of Lakeland, FL; his son, David (Leigh), Wheeling, WV; son-in-law, Mark (Lynn) Church of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; his sisters, Donna Taudte of Inglis, FL and Linda Huggins of Leesburg, FL; grandchildren, Kyle Huggins, Maya Huggins, Adam (Abbey) Church, and Sydney (Dan) Church-Stenger; his great grandchildren, Aaron, Asher and Anna Joy Church, Luke and Sam Stenger and Evee Huggins; nephew, Travis (Virginia) Smith; nieces, Tiffany (Tony) Kemmitzer and Holly (Haroon) Gowers-Chishti; great nephew, Murphy Smith; and great nieces, Delaney Smith, Taylor and Alexis Kemmitzer, and Farah Chishti. In his 60+ years of pastoring, he married, baptized, buried, comforted, counseled, laughed and cried with more people than most of us will ever meet or know. Often, he claimed to be retired, but that never really happened. He was a servant of God, and a good shepherd. Those who called him father, brother, grandpa, great grandpa, pap, uncle, friend or pastor are blessed with good memories. For those who knew and remember the Reverend Richard L Huggins, there will be a Life. An Honoring Ceremony will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Follansbee on October 18, at 10:30 a.m. For those who know and remember his family members, please join us in honoring Dick’s memory. If you plan to stay after the ceremony, there will be light luncheon. We ask that you notify Donna Taudte (sister) 305-215-3644 and let her know so we’ll be able to plan on enough food to “break bread” together.
