GERALD “JERRY” EDWIN WELLMAN, JR., 78, of Wellsburg, WV, passed away on March 24, 2026, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on February 27, 1948, in Steubenville, OH, he was the son of the late Gerald Edwin Wellman Sr. and Rose M. (Bonacci) Wellman. Jerry was a hardworking and dedicated man who took pride in everything he did. He spent much of his career at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation, where he served as a safety chairman and was deeply involved in promoting workplace safety. After his time in the steel industry, he worked as a security guard at Mylan Pharmaceuticals, now Viatris, while also working at the Wheeling Island Casino Greyhound Kennel. He later transitioned to the casino full-time, where he continued his work in security. Jerry genuinely enjoyed being around people and never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation, something that made him well known and appreciated by those he met. He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. Jerry had a deep love for his community and especially for youth sports. For more than 20 years, he coached with the Follansbee Blue Waves and was an active supporter of the Brooke High School Boosters, leaving a lasting impact on countless young athletes and families. He believed in showing up, working hard, and supporting others—values he carried throughout his life. He was a graduate of West Liberty University and went on to earn his master’s degree from West Virginia University in 1991, an accomplishment he was very proud of. Jerry was a lifelong Mountaineer fan and held WVU season tickets for over 30 years. Even as he got older and couldn’t attend games as often as he would have liked, he remained a devoted supporter and followed the team closely. Above all, Jerry was a devoted father. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth “Kenny” Wellman. He is survived by his son, Jerad Wellman (Markisa Nightengale) of Wellsburg, WV, along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews who will remember him for his steady presence, generosity, and sense of humor. Family and friends were received on Saturday, March 28, 2026 until the time of a Liturgy of the Word at Reasner Funeral Home, Wellsburg, with Father Justin Golna officiating. Full military honors were conducted by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad and the U.S. Army Reserve. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s memory to the Brooke High School Athletic Department.
