GEORGE MICHAEL PSAROS, 83, of Weirton, WV, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a true pillar of strength within our community passed away peacefully Monday, June 12, 2023, at Weirton Medical Center. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and unwavering support for his family and friends. Born to Greek immigrant parents from Asia Minor, Michael “Mike the Barber” and Maria Kallos Psaros, George embraced his heritage and carried its values throughout his life. He was a humble and quiet man, known for his warm heart, gentle nature, genuine kindness, and respect towards others. George’s love for his family knew no bounds, and he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who always placed their needs above his own. A 1957 graduate of Weir High School, George returned from serving with the United States Army as a First Lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps in Germany and eagerly made his way back to his hometown. Little did he know that his return would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one that would introduce him to the love of his life, Mary Ann Loufakis. On July 11, 1965, George married the love of his life, Mary Ann Loufakis, and together they shared a beautiful marriage for 58 years. Their love and commitment were blessed with the gift of two sons and five cherished grandchildren. George’s role as a husband, father, and grandfather was one he embraced with profound love and dedication, creating lasting memories and imparting invaluable life lessons to each generation. George’s professional journey was marked by unwavering dedication and a strong work ethic. For 37 years, he worked at Weirton Steel, where he played a vital role in saving the mill after the devastating fire on the number nine tandem mill. His exceptional skills as an electrical engineer and his tireless efforts enabled him to rebuild the tandem mill within an astonishing six months, securing the future of Weirton Steel and preserving countless jobs. He retired as the Vice President of Operations. After his retirement, George was appointed commissioner of Steel Futures by the Governor of West Virginia. Faith was an integral part of George’s life, and he found solace and spiritual nourishment at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church. He actively participated in the church’s community, offering his support, wisdom, and kindness to those in need. George was also a proud member of the AHEPA Lodge, embodying the principles of the organization and cherishing his Greek heritage. Beyond his professional and personal achievements, George was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and West Virginia University Mountaineers, passionately following it’s athletic teams. George was a Mountaineer’s Mountaineer! His love for sports served as a reminder of the joy and camaraderie found in shared experiences, and he cherished the memories made while cheering for his favorite teams. He and his wife, MaryAnn, attended three Steelers Super Bowls with their sons. George’s commitment to lifelong learning was evident in his pursuit of education. He obtained an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from West Virginia University, followed by a master’s degree in management and an MBA from Franciscan University in Steubenville. His thirst for knowledge and dedication to self-improvement exemplified his character and set an inspiring example for others to follow. Throughout his career, George demonstrated respect and fairness in his interactions with his fellow workers, both in management and the union. His ability to bridge gaps and foster a sense of unity was admired by all who knew him. George’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations to strive for harmony and cooperation in their professional and personal relationships. George will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Mary Ann, his sons, Michael (Robin), and Harry (Michelle); his cherished grandchildren, Alexandra (Robert) Goldburg, Leo, Gus, Marina, and Maximos Psaros; his brother, Perry (Carol) Psaros; his sister, Pearl (Nick) Tranto; and his sister-in-law, Kathy Dematatis. Friends and family were received on Thursday, June 15 ,2023 until the time of funeral services, at the All-Saints Greek Orthodox Church, Weirton. The funeral service was officiated by His Eminence, Archbishop Elpidophoros, the senior Hierarch of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and His Eminence, Metropolitan Savas, of the Holy Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh. A special written message was read at the funeral service from His All Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, leader of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians.
