GEORGE PAUL SLANCHIK, 95, passed away on June 30, 2023, at the Weirton Geriatric Center. George was born on March 8, 1928, in Holidays Cove, WV., a son of the late John and Helen (Walkowski) Slanchik. George served in the US Navy during WW II at Leyte Gulf in the South Pacific on the USS Strategy AM-308, a mine sweeper that swept mines for the occupation troops going into Japan. George was employed at Weirton Steel with 44 years of service. On July 1, 1950, George married the late Sophie (Guz) Slanchik. George was also preceded in death by his grandson, George (Georgie) M. Slanchik, his brother John Slanchik, and his two sisters Jean Nyman and Theresa Herkle. He is survived by his sons George (Joanne) Slanchik, Frank (Susan) Slanchik, and daughter Maryann (Bill) Marino, he is also survived by his grandsons, Rob Slanchik, Bryan (Erin) Slanchik, Justin Slanchik, Bill Marino, and Doug (Marisa) Marino, and great-grandson Geno Slanchik and great-granddaughter, Adaline Marino. The family would like to thank Dr. Makar and the staff for taking excellent care of our father for 51 years. The family would also like to give a thank you to the staff of Grace Cottage, where George resided for the last five years, also the staff at Weirton Geriatric Center, 2nd floor (Garden Place), and Valley Hospice for keeping George comfortable in his last days. Family and friends were invited to pay their respects Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton, until the time of the service. Interment followed in Saint Paul’s Cemetery. Fr. Binu Sebastian presided. George was buried next to his wife, Sophie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s name to the Community Bread Basket, 3501 West Street, Weirton, WV. 26062.
