Bethany College proudly ushered in the Class of 2027, the largest class in a decade, with its Matriculation ceremony. The event marks a significant milestone in the academic journey of the incoming freshmen, officially welcoming them to the Bethany community and opening the doors to a transformative educational experience.
The ceremony commenced with the gathering of new students outside the Ogden Dining Hall. The excitement was evident as the Class of 2027 prepared for a historic processional through the iconic Oglebay Gates, leading them up to Pennington Quadrangle. This symbolic procession signified their formal introduction to Bethany College and represented a commitment to their academic pursuits.
In his inspiring address, Bethany President Dr. Jamie Caridi extended a warm welcome to the new students and expressed his confidence in the profound impact they would make on the campus and the world beyond. He reflected on the significance of the matriculation tradition, highlighting the connection it establishes with Bethany College’s rich history and the promise it holds for the future.
“As the largest class in a decade, you also bring your own stories, perspectives, cultures, and backgrounds, and we want to learn from you, so share your thoughts as you stretch your mind and challenge your comfort zone. Our founder Alexander Campbell actually envisioned Bethany College as a place where, upon graduation, students would become their own teachers and pupils, and continue their education throughout their lives. More than 180 years later, we are still embracing his vision as we educate effective, honorable, humane, and intelligent citizens who believe and will promote the creation of a world of worth and value. Now it’s your turn to create, grow, learn, debate, and develop your path, all while helping others and partnering with one another in finding solutions to society’s most pressing needs,” said Caridi.
Caridi emphasized the role of the faculty and staff in guiding and nurturing the students throughout their journey. He encouraged students to seek out opportunities for collaboration, inquiry, and personal growth. His address resonated with the largest class in a decade, acknowledging their diverse backgrounds and perspectives as valuable contributions to the Bethany community.
During the ceremony, Caridi also highlighted the institution’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the student experience. He announced recent additions to the curriculum, including new majors and minors, as well as groundbreaking partnerships with esteemed institutions. These developments underline Bethany College’s dedication to providing students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in an ever-evolving world.
“I am so proud of everyone here because I have seen firsthand the dedication they all bring to their classes, to moving our mission forward, and to life at our College. We all want the best for you, and we will never stop working to help you reach your dreams,” Caridi concluded.
The incoming class was then invited to sign the matriculation book, a tradition dating back to the 1800s. By doing so, each student pledged to approach their education with dedication, embrace diversity, uphold the values of Bethany College, and stay focused on their journey to graduation.
