Martha Lorene Smith Tipton

MARTHA LORENE SMITH TIPTON, 89, of Wellsburg, WV died peacefully on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry, OH. Martha was born on June 6, 1934, in Sistersville, WV, a daughter of the late William Manfred “Dutch” and Mettie Mae (Thompson) Brewer. In addition to her parents Martha is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Paul E. Smith in 2007; two daughters, Rebecca Jo Yost and Cindy Helt; one son, Edward Smith; a granddaughter, Jennifer DeStefano; a son-in-law, Ralph Brady; three brothers, Donald, Billy, and Charles Brewer; six sisters: Esther Harter, Emma Stewart, Imogene Weltz, Marie and Betty Brewer, and Rosemary (Richard) Kirk; one grandson; and two great granddaughters. Martha was Nazarene by faith and worked many years at Mammoth Plastics as a set up operator. Martha loved working in her flowers and spent hours deadheading and arranging her floral works of art. She loved to bowl and wished she could return to the sport. She also loved baking, and she made the best peanut butter fudge. When she tired of baking, she resorted to enjoying her favorite snack, Little Debbie snack cakes. One could always see her sitting on the front porch rocking away in her rocking chair. Another pastime was working puzzles, but only the ones with three hundred pieces. She was a spiffy dresser and was always very conscious of her appearance. She loved it when the great grandchildren came over and played in the yard. She always rewarded them for chores by giving them a few dollars to spend at the Dollar Tree. We know she would like to thank her neighbors, the Ferrells, the Fergusons, and the Marks for being there when she needed them. Also, a special thank you goes out to her TV-watching buddy, Judy Fowler, who spent hours watching their favorite TV show, The Andy Griffith Show. Martha is survived by five children: Belinda (Danny) Boyce of Dillonvale, OH, Paul (Donna) Smith Follansbee, WV, Kim Brady of Parrish, FL, Lorraine (Jeff) Shaffer, and Todd (Marlena) Smith; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith; and one son-in-law John Helt, all of Wellsburg, WV; another son-in-law, Dickie Yost of Pittsburgh, PA; and a sister-in-law, Norma Jean Brewer of Sistersville, WV; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation was held on Thursday, November 9, 2023 until the time of the funeral service, with Pastor James Monogioudis officiating, at Mullenbach Funeral Home, Follansbee. Interment followed at Franklin Cemetery in Wellsburg. Condolences may be sent to www.mullenbachfh.com.
