ELENI “YIA-YIA” PAPAIOANNIS, loving wife, mother, yia-yia, and great grandmother passed away peacefully at the Weirton Geriatric Center on May 9, 2024. She was born one of five children to Maria and George Pagonas in Domvrena, Greece. Eleni was a woman of strength, compassion, and had an unyielding love and devotion for her faith, family, and friends. She cherished her church, All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, and was a member of Senior Citizens, Daughters of Penelope, Philoptochos Society, Agia Markella Chian Society, and St. Fontini Society. Eleni loved and adored her grandchildren and took pride in teaching the language and customs of Greece. She enjoyed showing them her cooking and baking tips and sharing her delicious recipes. Her loving husband, Demetrious, and loving daughter, Athena preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers and two sisters. She will be remembered with much love, gratitude, and admiration by her son, Louie (Linda) Pappas; son-in-law, Ted Ameredes; her grandchildren, James and Eleni Pappas, Harry (Amber) Ameredes, Theodore James “T.J. ( Samantha) Ameredes, Alex (Rachel) Ameredes; and 12 beautiful great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 until the time of the funeral liturgy, at All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, with Reverend Father Matthew Moore presiding. Interment followed at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, followed by traditional Mercy Meal at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church, 3528 West St., Weirton, WV 26062. Her family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Makar, and to the Weirton Geriatric Center. They will always be grateful for the love and kindness given by the entire staff.
