MARY MILLER peacefully left this life on September 19, 2025, at WVU-WMC while awaiting her third daughter’s farewell, surrounded by four children. A lifelong resident of Weirton, Voneta dedicated her heart and soul to her community, especially through her valued role at Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served multiple terms as Deaconess, was a key member of the Board of Trustees, and was widely recognized as a pillar of the church. Born on October 21, 1935, in Weirton, Voneta was a daughter of Albert and Ann (Maczko) Smith. Approaching her ninetieth birthday, she exemplified a remarkable spirit that touched countless lives. Known for her culinary prowess, she delighted many with her exquisite dishes during her years at the Pleasant Valley Country Club. Her cooking was not merely a source of sustenance but an expression of her love and care, particularly evident in her revered peanut butter cake and soothing potato soup, which she often shared with those in need. A devoted volunteer, Voneta spent twenty-five years at the Weirton Area Christian Center, nurturing the youth of her community, whom she embraced as her own. To many, she was a beloved grandmother figure, offering warmth and wisdom with every meal she prepared for them every Thursday. She and Paul found joy in their connections with fellow Three Score members as they explored venues across the Tri-State area. Voneta had a vibrant hobby life, indulging in gardening and needlepoint, which brought her peace and fulfillment. She cherished her forty-year membership in her card club and derived joy from challenging crossword puzzles during the winter months, as well as reading heartwarming novels. Most importantly, she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their sporting events and recitals, becoming their biggest cheerleader. In addition to her parents, Voneta was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Paul Allen Miller, Jr., who sadly passed on April 23, 2021, and her brother Robert Smith. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Paul Miller, III, Cindy Cooper, Tami (Tom) Vernau, and Kimberly (Donald) Greenlief; sisters Patty Gerlando, Gayle (Howard) Geisenheimer; her grandchildren, Danielle Carnes, Brian Vernau, Dan Vernau, Heather Greenlief, Michael Miller, and Rachel Miller; her great-grandchildren, Cooper and Colette Carnes, William, Caroline, Cora, and Nolan Vernau, and Mylan Hudson. Voneta’s request for cremation has been honored. She was cremated at the Greco-Hertnick Funeral Home, Weirton. Services were conducted at the convenience of Voneta’s family. Voneta was placed to rest with her husband, Paul, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Voneta’s name to the Weirton Heights Memorial Baptist Church, 121 Ivy Lane, Weirton, WV. 26062. Voneta’s family would like to thank the staff of the Weirton Geriatric Center, especially the kind staff of the Enchanted Garden, for all their love and kindness that was given to her during her stay.
