The Wellsburg Fourth of July Oil Can Derby committee has announced the return of the Oil Can Derby Stock and Super Stock cars for the 2026 Fourth of July Celebration!
As tradition continues, the derby will be held on July 4, with a start time of 9 a.m. All race teams must arrive at 8 a.m. Each racer is to provide their own derby car. The derby will be held on Fourth Street in Wellsburg, practice runs for first time racers is mandatory. Weigh-ins of all cars are required, with the dates being as follows:
July 1: Weigh in at Al’s Garage on 4th Street from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
July 2: Weigh in at Wellsburg Fire Station on 12th Street from 4-8 p.m.
July 3: Practice runs and weigh in at Al’s Garage on 4th Street
After the car has been weighed and completed, the practice runs cars will be impounded until the day of the race.
First time racers are to do four practice runs with veteran racers required to do one.
An entry fee of $40 is required and all racers are to have a helmet to participate.
A new event to the line up is the SuperKids Derby. The SuperKids Derby is designed for kids and adults with special needs. Individuals with disabilities will have the opportunity to race in cars designed especially for them with a co-pilot by their side, offering extra support and safety. Racers will be seatbelted with a three point harness and helmet. There is no age limit required. All racers must be under a weight limit of 220 pounds. Eleven derby cards have been created, each one painted with a different movie theme or character that is common and recognized by all individuals. There is no fee for the racers to participate. The Wellsburg Fourth of July Committee mission is to empower individuals who seek to make racing memories and friendships, by providing an opportunity for each racer to feel free and fly.
