Julia V. Nogay

JULIA V. NOGAY, 93, of Weirton, WV, passed away Friday, January 6, 2023 at Weirton Medical Center. She was born November 4, 1929 in Weirton, daughter of the late Thomas and Mariana Baran Guz. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Nogay (1991); daughter, Valerie Nogay (1996); brothers, John Guz, Andrew Guz, Chester Guz, Frank Guz and Edward Guz who passed as a child; and sisters, Eleanor Flowers, Virginia Najdecki, Genevieve Dobies, Anna Salanci and Sophie Slanchik. Julia was a 1947 graduate of Weir High School, member of Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. Apart from raising her family, Julia helped her husband with the family business: Nogay & Sons Moving and Storage for many years, handling everything from scheduling to bookkeeping and payroll to making lunch for the crew. She was an exceptional cook, known for her homemade cream pies and pierogies. She told remarkable stories about growing up on a farm during the 1930’s — she was 9 years old when they first got electricity and her childhood chores included milking the cows, churning butter, and catching, killing and plucking a chicken for Sunday dinner, all while watching her younger brother, Frank. She met the love of her life, Walter (whom she called “Lol”), at the Polish picnic along King’s Creek, and she selflessly returned to the farm late in life to help care for her father and brother, John. She loved to sing Polish Christmas kolendas and old Methodist hymns, but most of all she loved to sit on the porch at the Guz family farm and watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play in the field and the creek. Her final words to her children were not to worry, she had a good life, so they should be happy. Julia is survived by sons, Thomas Nogay of Whitefish, MT and Arlie Nogay (Rose) of Seven Fields, PA; daughter, Ellen Nicholas (Ernest, Jr.) of Weirton, WV; special family to Lynnellen Winkler; she was BABCIE to 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Roberts of Weirton; brother-in-law, George Slanchik of Weirton; sister-in-law, Shirley Guz of Weirton and she was Aunt Julie to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Visitation was held Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Steel and Wolfe Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Weirton. Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Weirton, with Reverend Tony Thurston presiding. Interment followed at St. Paul Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 200 Preston Avenue, Weirton, WV 26062. Julia’s family would like to thank the Serra Manor family of staff and residents for taking such loving care of their mother, as well was the nurses and staff of 5th floor of Weirton Medical Center.
