In an effort to continue to increase educational and athletic opportunities for students in Brooke County, Brooke County Middle Schools has begun their inaugural middle school golf program. The response has been exceptional in its inaugural season. The response has been exceptional and the team now has 12 enthusiastic golfers who are working hard and are eager to develop skills, fundamentals, etiquette, integrity, and perseverance that are so important in the game of golf. These are the athletic and personal skills that they will be able to use for a lifetime.
The young Bruin golfers have dedicated extra time on the driving range and on the course to continue to get better each day. This has been possible through the cooperation of Brooke Hills Park and Highland Springs Golf Course.
In addition, the team has received tremendous support from the school, the community and the high school golf program. Many have contributed through club donations, as well as providing water, shoes, and clothing. The goal of the program is to make golf accessible to every interested child without imposing a financial burden on families.
The inaugural Brooke Middle School Golf Team includes sixth graders Amelia Falk, Aidan Turbanic, Kole Ferguson, Jackson Dewitt, and Evera Halstead; 7th graders Ethan Arthurs, Alexia Shifflet, Conner Lazear, Ethan McCord, Xavier L. Karczewski, and Keenan Lowry; and eigth graders Mallix Morris and Owen Harms.
The team is coached by Hilary L. Zurbuch, LPC. She brings 15 years of experience in working with young golfers in the tristate area and her leadership and enthusiasm has been a key reason for the success of the young program.
In addition to their fundamental sessions the team will have the opportunity to play some competition in the area. They will next play on Thursday, August 22 at the Bloch Memorial Golf Course at Wheeling Park and their next home match will be on Thursday, August 29 at Brooke Hills Park.
