Young people of the Ohio Valley will have the opportunity to participate in the new and expanded summer youth golf tour. This year’s three events will use the Oglebay courses of Crispen Center, Wheeling Park and for the first time the Highland Springs golf course outside of Wellsburg.
The season opens up with the traditional Elks Junior Tournament on June 18. This event for ages 8-18 has been held for generations at Oglebay Resort sponsored by the Elks club of Wheeling. The unique thing about this event has always been that it is everyone’s favorite price… FREE. Players get their round of golf, drinks, awards and a nice meal afterwards while parents enjoy a FREE golf cart to watch their son or daughter.
This year’s event will be divided into two divisions to allow players to play courses at their skill level and experience.
The older division for age 10-18 will be 18 holes at the tournament friendly Crispin Center Course. The course will be set up using various tee boxes to allow for the best experience for each golfer. Grade levels include: Boys 10-12, Boys 13-15, Boys 16-18, Girls 10-12, Girls 13-15, Girls 16-18
This year, the younger division for novice players ages 8-10 years old will be at the cozy Wheeling Park Bloch Memorial Golf Course. This 7 hole younger event will include shortened tees for players learning to play with holes averaging 150 yards or less.
Again the Elks event is everyone’s favorite price …. FREE
The 6th annual Nick Gaudino Memorial Golf Tournament will be Thursday, July 10 at the cozyBloch Memorial Golf Course at Wheeling Park. Nick Gaudino was a resident of Triadelphia, WV who caddied in his teenage years at Wheeling Park. He was drafted to serve in the army in WWII and was seriously wounded resulting in him being multiply handicapped throughout the rest his life. Despite that, he played golf (mostly one handed) for more than 30 years as a member of the Wheeling Park and Oglebay Golf Clubs. There will be awards in seven divisions for both boys and girls with the competitors playing from tees appropriate for skill level and age. A post event pizza party sponsored by Dicarlo’s Pizza and the Law offices of Greg Gaudino
All proceeds for this event go to fund the Nick Gaudino Memorial Scholarships. Entry fee is $12.
July will conclude with the new Main Street Bank Junior Tournament at the Highland Springs Golf Course on July 16. The older players will play 18 holes and younger golfers will play 9 holes from significantly shortened tees.
There will be awards in several divisions for both boys and girls with the competitors playing from tees appropriate for skill level and age.
This event is also free thanks to Highland Springs Golf Course and Main Street Bank and will included awards and small meal afterwards.
Applications for all events can be obtained at local golf courses or by e-mailing David Gaudino at [email protected].
